The true story of a Marine, how he got there and how he succeeded. : William Tecumseh Sherman once stated that "War is Hell". I believe most people view that statement in the abstract, never having seen the reality of it. "Vietnam: A Marine's Chronicle of Change" is most certainly not abstract. Byron Mezick, a former Marine and Vietnam veteran has captured the true essence of war at a VERY personal level. And his vivid descriptions of combat are preceded by a tale of a troubled childhood and his journey from there to becoming a Marine. As the reader will learn, Marine "Boot Camp" is a searing event for the young men and women who choose to endure it, knowing that the outcome will be beneficial despite the physical and mental trials. Boot Camp leads to becoming part of a team, gaining confidence in one's abilities and, finally, gaining an entirely new outlook on life. Mezick then, narrates his experiences as a combat Marine in Vietnam, taking the reader through being a "newby" with too much to learn in too short a time about staying alive and accomplishing his assigned mission. He makes mistakes, overcomes them, is promoted based on his learned leadership abilities and succeeds in becoming a leader of men in combat. That is no mean accomplishment. All this is done through an extremely raw yet realistic narrative of what he is forced to see and what he is sometimes forced to do to keep his subordinates alive. He survives and yes, thrives in his efforts to put his learned lessons to work in a hostile environment. His epilog, I suspect, is a bit lacking in what he accomplished in his transition to civilian life. Leaving a combat environment where one's head is constantly on a swivel, and everyone not a Marine is suspect can be a jarring, life changing experience. The true grit of this man shows when he tells the reader of his life's desire to return to his wife and daughter rather than continue his successful efforts to convince the Vietnamese citizens of a small farming village that he was there to help them better their lives. He makes this decision in the face of the persistent efforts of a village leader and his commanding officer to take some leave and return to his previous assignment. His refusal to return show courage in the face of enormous pressure. Three million Americans served in Vietnam. I was one, serving for a year in and out of combat with the 9th Infantry Division in the Vietnamese delta area. We each have our own story. Having read several accounts of service in Vietnam, I can assure the reader that this one stands out. It is a true story told by a true American hero.

USMC defined : this is probably the best book re: Vietnam from a grunt's point of view. The author explains the Marine Corps to a tee. No hype, just facts and written at a quick, no nonsense pace. It is at the top of just about all books written about wartime experiences I have read and I have read plenty.

Vietnam: A Marine,s Chronicle : Th book, written by a seventy-six year old man shares his raw and real remembrance of a younger man and the lessons of leadership learned in war. It deals honestly with fear, regret, the taking of life and his return to to a country unwilling or unable to acknowledge his service at its behest. It is a compelling read.
